AILSA ROSS studied law at Edinburgh University, but was always sneaking off to write stories as the food and drink editor at the student newspaper.
Then, when she spent a year on exchange at Copenhagen University, she entered an essay about living in Denmark to a British Council writing competition and won the Scottish prize. That’s when she decided she wanted to be a travel writer.
After graduating, for a few years she took on odd jobs — cleaning yachts in Greece, teaching English in Seoul, working with an online business in Berlin — so she could meet people from around the world, learn from them, and write their stories.
She is now based in Canada and has recently been writer-in-residence at Berton House in the Yukon, awarded by the Writers’ Trust of Canada.
While Ailsa lives in Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rockies, when she closes her eyes she only sees puffins—a common affliction among people who’ve grown up on Scotland’s north east coast.
Ailsa happens to be our daughter.
