Oathlaw Pottery

Ian and Maggie Kinnear have been producing distinctive ceramics at Oathlaw Potttery since 1988 and we exhibit their work regularly at Tolquhon.

Ian Kinnear is a graduate in Drawing and Painting from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee. He continues to paint but ceramics have dominated over recent years, working in partnership with his wife Maggie. Both exhibit widely throughout Scotland and Ireland.

Thrown forms predominate with slab construction used 
for sculptural pieces sometimes in combination with 
welded steel. Glazes are soft blues with oxides and wax resist decoration reflecting Ian's background as a painter. The work is strong and sculptural in form and while functional, elevates the everyday serving of food and drink to the ceremonial.

The majority of the work made in the studio is stoneware fired to 1280 C using either the large 50 cubic foot propane fired kiln, designed and built by Ian, or a smaller propane kiln.

Raku is fired in a small kiln outside in the yard. The pots are removed from the kiln at 980 C and reduced and smoked in bins lined with paper and insulation to produce distinctive copper lustre and crackle glazes.
