THERE SEEMS TO BE rather an air of gloom around at the moment. If it’s not Brexit, it’s the weather; if it’s not the weather, it’s the economy; if it’s not the economy, it’s the environment. So our upcoming exhibition could not be better timed. What could be better to lift the spirits than beautiful, colourful paintings? And who is more of a master of bright, bold, vibrant colour than John Lowrie Morrison.

Politicians come and go, political parties come and go, the weather changes,  but high quality oil paintings will last many lifetimes. And if it’s dreich and grey outside, you can enjoy bright summer days or blazing sunsets in our new exhibition by John Lowrie Morrison.

Jolomo, as he is known, is one of the most popular and successful artists in Scotland, with an international reputation. Even those with little interest in art will recognise a Jolomo landscape with its distinctive heightened colour and richly textured oil paint. He is one of the most copied artists in the land but no one quite masters his unique work.

He first exhibited with us in 1998, just as he was beginning to paint full time, having taken early retirement from his role as an Art Adviser in Education. He has shown regularly at Tolquhon since then and held a hugely successful solo exhibition here in Spring 2017.

We are delighted he is now returning with an even bigger exhibition. There are 55 pieces in the show bringing together paintings of the artist’s favourite places including the islands of Arran, Gigha, Iona, Jura, Mull and Tiree. From fresh summer meadows to stormy winter seas, quiet moonlit skies to rich intense sunsets, John Lowrie Morrison paints all seasons and all weathers, always glorying in colour.

A Jolomo exhibition is a visual and sensory feast. ‘A Tapestry of Colour’ opens on Saturday 15 June and continues until Tuesday 9 July.
