JENNY MATTHEWS was born in 1964 and grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland. She studied at Edinburgh College of Art under Elizabeth Blackadder, John Houston and Ann Oram, graduating in 1986 with a BA (Hons) in Drawing and Painting. Jenny has lived in France and Indonesia and is now based in Edinburgh.
Jenny has earned her reputation as an accomplished watercolourist over the last 30 years, during which time her work has been exhibited extensively in the UK and abroad. She has exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA), Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW), Royal Watercolour Society (RWS) and Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour (RI).
In 2003 Jenny received a commission from author Ian Rankin. In October 2004 she appeared in the Top 20 of The Scotsman’s ‘Savvy Art Investors Guide, 20 Scottish Artists to Buy’. In 2007 she won the Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer Purchase Prize in the RWS 21st Century Watercolour Competition, London, in 2008 she appeared in the Scotsman’s ‘5 Best for Scottish Watercolours’ and in 2015 she won the RWS Contemporary Watercolour Competition ‘Exhibitions Award’.
In 2016 Jenny was shortlisted for the international watercolour prize ‘Marched’Acqua’, in Italy. Since then she has been involved in leading the artistsrepresenting Scotland to the annual watercolour convention ‘FabrianoinAcquarello’,Italy.
In 2017, as Artist in Residence, Jenny spent 2 weeks working in Fabriano, Italy, based in the Paper and Watermark Museum.
