George Muir

GEORGE MUIR grew up in Wanlockhead, a small village in the Lowther Hills of Dumfries and Galloway. She remembers there being a very strong sense of community in the village, small as it was.

Due to its location it was at times very exposed to and at the mercy of wild winters and there were power cuts and times of isolation, when the roads were closed.  To her this meant many things including adventure and isolation and a particular importance, investment and identity surrounding the home.  She can remember the magic and wonder of playing at her grandmother's house, climbing up the ladder to the attic, playing with her numerous boxes of trinkets that she loved to hoard.  Her childhood is a huge source of inspiration and her childhood memories are very special to her. On leaving home, George gained a degree in Interior Design at Edinburgh College of Art and then went on to train as an art therapist.  She has now established a studio in Edinburgh and exhibits widely.

"I mainly use oil and acrylic paint and work by building up layers, from which I can explore depth, texture and colour...... I enjoy exploring experience time and relationship in my work, which often revolves around a strong sense of place...... I like to play with paint, it allows me to relive some of my childhood memories and playfulness.....and the precious places, relationships and magic of those times."

The painter Georgie Muir ...makes an indelible impression with a set of stunning works that evoke the spirit of Joan Eardley in her approach to her coastline subject matter.  Signing her works as George Muir, she creates textured, semi-abstract landscapes and still-lifes that are deliberately gestural and improvised, combined with a colour sense that is fresh and hugely attractive.
