Frances Innes

Frances Innes

FRANCES INNES is a painter of the natural environment.  She paints the sea, beaches, cliffs, horizons, moors and trees around her home in Peterhead on the north east coast of Scotland. Frances paints mostly in waterbased paint and mixed media but occasionally in oils.

Peterhead is the ideal location for me with its proximity to the sea, its big skies and amazing east coast light.  I walk along the shore most days in all weathers.  Although a five minute walk away, I can see the sea from my rooftop studio so can watch the changing colours and wild weather.  I am especially attracted to changing light on the sea and menacing skies.

Some summers, she takes off to live in a salmon bothy on the very edge of Loch Broom in the far north west of Scotland.  With intermittent internet, no mobile signal or television there is lots of inspiration and lots of painting. Although the weather can be unseasonably wet and cold with only an occasional glimpse of sun, mostly in the evening, the views are spectacular even in the murk and she paints quick watercolours between showers.
