KIRSTIE COHEN describes her paintings as inhabiting a place between traditional landscape and abstraction. In both seascapes and landscapes, her work develops in the making as she gradually builds layer upon layer and eventually the painting evolves its own luminosity and depth.

“I have been told that my paintings have a spiritual quality, but it is a notion that I am not aware of or ever think about. One painting leads to the next, I react to what the paint does in application and if the painting works well for me it usually communicates to others. My relationship between the external landscape and the landscape of the mind is of equal importance. The physical and emotional are linked and I cannot proceed with one without the other.”
