Setting

We are fortunate at Tolquhon to be surrounded by a large attractive garden, further surrounded by rolling countryside.  There are fields, copses, farmland and woodland nearby and, away in the distance, the North Sea and the Forvie Sands can be seen.  The sea is far enough away for coastal haar to be kept at bay most of the time.  The colour of the land changes with the seasons as does the garden.

The Artist's Garden

The garden at Tolquhon is constantly evolving.   It has been developed and maintained by Danny Ross.  Like many artists, Danny has a love of flowers and gardens, of their colour, shape and form and when he is not in his studio or in the gallery, he is likely to be found in the garden.

Many enthusiastic gardeners visit the gallery, both artists and art lovers, and keen exchanges of ideas and, sometimes, plants take place.  Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the garden and walk around at their leisure.

The garden is well protected from chill winds by the surrounding mature hedges.  It is multi-layered with mature deciduous trees, fruit trees, conifers, shrubs and climbers among herbaceous plants underplanted with bulbs and annuals.  A succession of flowering cherries are in bloom during April and May with daffodils underfoot.  Rhododendrons and azaleas are in full flower during May and June when  herbaceous plants also begin to bloom.  A  beautiful small tree which makes a striking feature in autumn is cercidiphyllum japonicum; it has fresh, copper-tinged leaves in spring and summer and is  spectacular in September. See above.

There is an attractively designed pond (toddlers beware).

Sculpture

There are regular displays of sculpture in the garden with some permanent features also.  Everyone knows Gladys the goat who greets visitors at the door.  Gladys is a bronze by Mo Farquharson.   Children, in particular, welcome her as an old friend.

And who can forget Illona Morrice's  Bowlers or Tattie Howkers

Wildlife

The garden is home to a wide variety of wildlife.  Recorded species at Tolquhon, apart from art lovers, include badgers who are increasingly frequent visitors, foxes, roe deer, red squirrels, hedgehogs, weasels, stoats, buzzards, a heron or two, merlins, goshawks, whitethroats, linnets, pied wagtails, toads, red admirals, peacock butterflies, tortoiseshells...The list goes on.

We hope you can enjoy a visit to the gallery and take pleasure in the garden as well as the exhibitions.  Keep an eye on the website and see the garden as it changes throughout the year.
