Simone Lyon studied 3D Design, specialising in Ceramics, at Camberwell School of Art. After some time teaching ceramics she now runs her own studio in the Scottish borders where she makes a wide range of pieces, including large scale sculptures for the garden, bird-baths and water features for both indoor and garden settings. She also makes smaller pieces with modelled additions. Much of the inspiration for Simone's work comes from the natural world around her including toads, frogs and herons. The pieces are hand-built in heavily grogged clay using a range of techniques that include throwing, slab build and press moulds for basic shapes. All are given final and individual detail by hand using a number of tools. Hence, no two pieces are identical and they have their own characteristics. Simone has created and developed her
own range of matt and semi-matt glazes which are applied with
colouring oxides. The finish achieved is often rather stone-like and
the final firing to 1280ºC vitrifies the clay, increasing its weather
resistance.
