Julia Metcalfe

JULIA METCALFE came from a family of painters but it was not until she left home that she herself began to paint. She trained as a botanist at Leicester University then worked as a biology teacher. She painted as much as possible while teaching and bringing up a family but looked forward to being able to concentrate more seriously on painting when she retired in 1993. However her husband retired and bought a flock of breeding ewes; they moved house and Julia became a part-time shepherdess as well as creator of a garden from scratch. Now she has to make time for painting when she can.

Julia paints mainly in Watercolours and ideally likes to paint outdoors, enjoying both landscape and flower painting. Indeed the choice of plant in her garden is often influenced by its "paintability". She also teaches Watercolour painting in classes and workshops and is a founder member of the Garioch Art Group. She holds occasional painting workshops at Tolquhon Studio Workshop.

Julia enjoys hill walking and finds inspiration in wild landscapes. She spends a week in Normandy each year, painting and sketching with her brothers who are pleased to offer "constructive criticism". This is her fourth one woman show at Tolquhon.
