JOHN LOWRIE MORRISON returns to Tolquhon for his third one man show at the gallery. His first exhibition was held in 1998, soon after he began to paint full time, and it had a powerful impact. Since then, he has become probably the most successful artist in the country producing a truly remarkable body of work. Despite being in constant demand, his excitement and enthusiasm for painting remain undimmed and his energy unflagging. Like Joan Eardley, for him "..painting is like breathing - you have to do it!" A graduate of Glasgow School of Art, he gained a Post Diploma in 1972 and began a career in teaching, latterly in Argyll, where he continues to live. Known as Jolomo, he has developed a distinctive, vigorous expressive style. Using rich, thickly applied oils on canvas, in strong colour, he celebrates the beauty of the natural world around him on the west coast of Scotland. A lay Reader with the Church of Scotland, John’s life and work are intertwined. "I try to paint beautiful paintings as I hold closely to Monet's statement that beauty has a healing power". He has exhibited worldwide and his works are in countless public and private collections.
