Islands

Islands afford a particular fascination for many people, including many artists. Surrounded by sea, their inaccessibility is part of their attraction, providing time and space apart. Moulded by geography, the Northern Isles and Western Isles of Scotland have very different characteristics. The colour and culture of the islands of the Mediterranean are different again. A diverse group of artists are exhibiting, a number of whom live on islands. Included are Dorothy Bruce from Cumbrae, Moira Ferrier from Mull and Ruth Brownlee from Shetland. Other artists have strong associations with islands although they live on mainland Scotland; islands provide them with unlimited subject matter. These include Margaretann Bennett, Val Carr, Frank Colclough, Frank Donnan, Ian Elliot, Gillian Goodheir, Norma Hansell, David Hawson, Aliisa Hyslop, Duncan MacLeod RSW, Silvana McLean, Julia Metcalfe, John Lowrie Morrison (Jolomo), Donald Murray, Alyn O'Donnell, Danny Ross, Tom Shanks RSW RGI, David Smith, Fiona Taylor, Kitty Watt, Maggie Williams and Bill Wright RSW RGI PAI.
