WALTER AWLSON is known throughout
Britain for his ceramic sculpture but he is also a superb painter. His
main subject matter is the human figure which has interested him since
his secondary school days at Galashiels Academy, and his ability in
drawing forms the basis of his work. This interest was developed at
Edinburgh College of Art where he studied furniture design as his main
subject. Later, he discovered clay
and became fascinated with the handling of the material and the firing
of it. Of the human figure, he comments, “In all its subtlety and
complexity, it provides a never ending series of studies and
developments, which have sustained my career and lead on to future
directions. The difficulty involved in drawing or sculpting directly
from the model is always challenging. When working in clay, I like to
show the nature of the material and how the fingers or modelling tools
have formed it. Similarly, in paint, it is enjoyable to see the
brushstroke in the pigment.”
