MAGGIE WILLIAMS —
Sea Beyond ….
Living in the north east of Scotland you are never
far from the sight, the smell and the sound of the sea. Spending a lot
of time in Crovie on the Banffshire coast gives me the opportunity to be
right by the North Sea and I am particularly drawn there during times of
heavy seas and gale force northerly winds. Even from Udny where I live,
right at the top of the house, there is a short time - some two or three
days at the beginning of February - when I can see the sun rising from
the sea. For these paintings, I have returned again to Sutherland, and
to the north east coast of Spain for inspiration. I have also been
introduced to new exciting territory through involvement in the Demarco
Skateraw Project, painting on that incredible beach with its high
breaking waves over primeval stone strata with its views to the Bass
Rock and the Stevenson Lighthouse and with the eerie Torness nuclear
power station behind! So it is always the “road to the sea” I take
– usually from Udny, through its cathedral-like ancient beech avenues.
I find myself drawn again and again to these subjects.
