KATE PHILP followed an indirect route towards art. She graduated in Biological Sciences from Edinburgh University in 1993 and moved through garden design into a full time career in painting in 1997. She was born in Africa, brought up in Scotland and currently lives on the Berwickshire coast where contrasting stretches of sandy beaches and rugged cliffs inspire her work. As well as landscape and seascape, she also enjoys still life, figurative work and abstract studies. Kate has developed a distinctive style using both acrylic and watercolour, which allows for bold texture and strength of palette but also subtle and sensitive washes and line when subject matter requires a more spontaneous approach. This is Kate’s third solo exhibition at Tolquhon and it is eagerly awaited. Her appealing subjects, excellent use of colour and lively brushwork have made her paintings deservedly popular.
