INGEBJORG SMITH studied at Glasgow School of Art graduating in 1983 (BA hons, first class and MA). She worked initially as an illustrator for, among others, BBC Scotland Gaelic children’s TV, Scotland on Sunday and Canongate Press. She lectured part-time at Glasgow School of Art and designed theatre posters for 7:84,Tag and Theatre Highland, as well as designing sets, posters and costumes for Wildcat and Hallaballoo theatre companies. In the late 1980s she took a break and travelled extensively in Kenya, Asia and Australia, where she began to transform her illustration skills into fine art collage paintings, for which she is now known. These enchanting works have been described as “beautifully evocative, tactile and thoroughly magical. They have a sense of place and time that is beyond their subject, and a spirit that renders them magnetic”. Over the years Ingebjorg has undertaken a number of projects, including murals for Skibo Castle Childrens Barn and animation commissions for Arts in Motion. In 1999 she painted 12 8ftx4ft panels for the Inverness Museum Millennium Celebrations. She was commissioned to create 10 paintings for the restaurant at Kai Tak Airport in Hong Kong and 6 paintings for a cruise ship through the London Contemporary Arts Society. She has also done illustration work for the Scottish Malt Whisky Society. Ingebjorg moved to the Highlands 15 years ago and finds enormous inspiration in her environment. She spends a lot of time on hill and coastal walks, looking for birds and other wildlife, and trying to learn more about the habits of the birds she paints.
