ILLONA MORRICE was born in Copenhagen in 1954. Her father was a painter and her mother, a potter. She began sculpting in clay in her mother's workshop at an early age and exhibited her sculpture for the first time at the age of 17. On leaving college she opened up her own gallery in Copenhagen. In 1979 she moved to the UK, settling in Morayshire in 1986. Illona still works mostly in clay, although she now produces some of her sculptures in bronze. Her work is suitable for indoors or outdoors, and her pieces often serve a practical purpose, incorporating hollows to catch rainwater which birds can bathe in. She concentrates on animal and female subjects, creating pared down forms with beautiful lines and a serene feel. Illona describes her approach to her recent work: “Over the years I have realised the virtue of saying more with less, and so I strive with a few lines or curves to express a multitude of feelings, to let your imagination fill in what I have left space for, to create a peaceful sculpture, which will continue to grow with you and me”.
