Illona Morrice

1st June to 1st July 2008

ILLONA MORRICE was born in Copenhagen. Her father was a painter and her mother, a potter. She began sculpting in clay in her mother's workshop at an early age and exhibited her sculpture for the first time at the age of 17. She later moved to Scotland, settling in Morayshire in 1986. Illona still works mostly in clay, although she now also produces some of her sculptures in bronze. Her work is suitable for indoors or outdoors and makes wonderful garden sculpture as can be seen in the photograph above, taken by the pool at Tolquhon. Her work is continually changing and developing; it is now very much pared down with beautiful lines and a serene feel. “Over time I have realised that I can say more with less, and so I strive with a few lines and curves to express a multitude of feelings and let imagination fill in what I have left space for. I aim to create peaceful sculpture, which will continue to grow with you and with me. With so much ugliness in the world, if I can create something of beauty I guess that’s an achievement.”
