DUNCAN MACLEOD was born in Glasgow in 1952.  He studied at Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 1974. He then went on to teacher training at Jordanhill College of Education. Ever since, he has continued to paint and to exhibit widely and his work is much collected.  In 1980 he was elected to membership of the RSW. In 1981, he was awarded the Torrance Memorial Award at the RGI. He has been a member of the Scottish Arts Council Lecturers Panel since 1992 and has had an entry in Who's Who in Art since 1993.

Duncan uses watercolour and mixed media.  He has developed a distinctive and sophisticated use of collage, incorporating highly textured hand made paper which echoes the rough hewn landscape of the west coast of Scotland.  Mountains loom through mist, the sun emerges from clouds as one is drawn into each painting.

I often wonder about the journey, which is life itself.  I ponder my origins and their relationship to my present character.  Why do I harbour such an affinity with the natural world?  Why have I a great desire to capture it in paint?  Rock, sea and huge skies overwhelm me.  Remoteness facilitates true awareness of one's origins.  The natural elements act as a catalyst, making me more aware of my consciousness and true instincts.  Painting for me is an outward expression of inner feelings, an awareness of the inexplicable and a visual expression of this.  Perhaps it is a visual expression of the soul itself.
