Penelope Anstice

PENELOPE ANSTICE was born in Scotland and studied at Edinburgh College of Art.  She has travelled widely but moved back to her native Scotland 3 years ago after 10 years in London.  She  lived in Holland for 3 years and in Italy for a year, where she worked at the Verrocchio Arts Centre. She has travelled extensively to Morocco, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka and the colour and energy such countries present has greatly inspired her work. 

She has been drawn back to the dramatic landscape of the Highlands and Islands and to the Tay Estuary and Fife Coast where she now lives. Her oil landscapes and seascapes have become larger and more expressive with an emphasis on capturing shifting light and mood.  

"My paintings are a direct emotional response to the subject matter. I am drawn to scenes of fleeting drama, whether in a stormy sky or a crowded Indian market, where a moment of intense beauty has changed or is gone in a flash. It is the intensity that attracts me and compels a desire to record the moment before it has disappeared. I enjoy the challenge of working fast in watercolour or oil, directly from the subject and, motivated by colour and movement, to try to capture the essence of a scene. I produce larger and more considered oil paintings back in my studio."
