MARY DAVIDSON was born in Dundee, lived in Australia for a few years as a child, and has been living and working in the Glasgow and Edinburgh areas since 1986. In the early 90's she attended Glasgow School of Art on the Continued Learning Programme. Having drawn and painted most of her life, and after being invited to exhibit in many galleries throughout Scotland, she decided in 1994 to make painting her career. In 1995 Mary was elected an artist member of the Paisley Art Institute (PAI) and the following year was accepted into the Glasgow Society of Women Artists (GSWA). Her work has been accepted for exhibition at the Royal Glasgow Institute (RGI), the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW) and the Laing Exhibition. She has exhibited in group exhibitions throughout the UK, the Suth of France and New York, and has also had several solo shows.Mary works mostly in oils using brushes, knives, fingers, indeed almost anything to hand, to produce the desired result. Her work is in numerous private and public collections including Vanity Fair in New York, the Duke of Bedford, Gray’s School of Art, East Dunbartonshire Council and Cala Homes. Mary works mainly in water based media, in gouache and acrylics, which ideally suit her fluid, painterly style. She describes herself as a restless painter with varied interests. She likes to experiment with different techniques and media. She has a very sure sense of colour and composition and enjoys painting a range of subjects in an expressive manner which captures light and colour. She is excited by the effect of light and shade and continually strives to capture this in her work. She is particularly drawn to shorelines from both the East and West coasts of Scotland. She also enjoys landscapes, interiors and still life, especially jugs of flowers. I paint what I admire and what excites me visually. I love the challenge of translating into paint. It's not about capturing a scene with complete accuracy. For me the real excitement builds once the imagination takes over and the paint begins to work for me. I love the feel of paint. "Mary Davidson's oils have a lightness of touch often found only in drawing. Whether painting still life or landscape, she has a real connection to nature and the ability to lure her viewer into the moment. Her work is held in numerous private and public collections, including Vanity Fair in New York." HOMES & INTERIORS SCOTLAND "Mary Davidson's paintings are a must for anyone who appreciates the skill of an artist enthralled by paint. Personally I could stare at them for hours. Whether it's flowers, fruit, or boats at Catterline, Mary pushes and moulds her subjects as if they had been snatched suddenly from urbane reality and brought to a new, more interesting life, full of sensual colour and dramatic tones."
