JOE SMERNICKI graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone in 1972 then gained a post diploma. Since then, he has continued to paint and to exhibit his work. The paintings in this exhibition are all founded in the small fishing stations and farm holdings scattered throughout North and East Angus. The pictures use a heightened awareness of colour and often sharply contrasting tones to recreate the distinctive visual qualities to be found amongst steadings, farmyards, sheds and boats. The use of colour and tone captures the unique qualities and clarity of light to be found in the region and enhances the feeling of the changing seasons of the year. The paintings employ linear elements in their composition to highlight rhythms and flows which occur naturally within the subject matter.
