JEAN MARTIN was born in Glasgow.  She studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1964 to 1968.  In 1967 she gained a Hospitalfield Scholarship and in 1969 she trained at Aberdeen College of Education.  She has won a number of awards including the John and Mabel Craig Bequest and the Hutcheson Drawing Prize.  She exhibits widely and has work in private collections in the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Canada and the USA.

She is a masterful painter in Watercolours.  She handles the medium with consummate skill, using its translucent qualities to superb effect, conveying changing light and shade.  Her subject matter is often found in her immediate surroundings, particularly in her much loved garden and in collected objects.  She reflects her surroundings with acute observation and imparts feelings of joy and celebration through her work.

Jean writes, "If there is a unifying theme running through my paintings, it is light.  Living as I do by the wide-open shores of the Tay estuary, the particular light of this locality has deeply affected my work.  I love the cool northern light illuminating the fragile remains of of my large, somewhat chaotic garden in November and the clean bright light of spring.  Different seasons, times of day, and different locations present me with endless inspiration from the subtle distinctions of light.  As a result of being so enthused by my surroundings, I find that my paintings rarely stray too far from the original image.  Naturally, as each painting progresses, the cerebral processes of abstraction and selection involved in creating a painting, moves it on from being a mere copy, to being an image in its own right....  I think of my paintings of my paintings as a celebration.  The visual awareness, which informs them, is one of the best things about being an artist.  It makes the observation of the everyday things which surround me a positive delight.  It is this experience which I try to share in my painting."
