IRENE HALLIDAY was born at Kingsmuir by Forfar, Angus in 1931.  From 1948 - 1953 at  Arbroath High School and Dundee Art College, she gained successive scholarships and lectureships before becoming Principal Lecturer, Head of Art & Design at Didsbury College of Education, Manchester Polytechnic from 1956 - 1979. She also spent an academic year as a visiting professor at State University College, Buffalo, New York State from 1972 to 1973. She left full-time teaching at Manchester Polytechnic in 1979 but continued to teach summer schools in Alston, Hull, Lancashire and Harrogate. She never moved far from Scottish painting and in 2002 returned to live in Arbroath. The sea coast and the land around her home continue to give her great pleasure.

She was elected to the RSW in 1955

Artist's Statement:
I have always known how fortunate I was to live and work in Arbroath through school and college years. It was a rich environment, a sea town with harbours and related architecture, with imagery of trawler and fisherman and with a constant awareness for the sea. It provided romantic subject matter and invited painters to observe, to translate, to transform and to find the elusive pleasure of picture making.
