ILENE ERSKINE changed direction in 1987 when she took early retirement from her position as an educational psychologist and took up a place at Edinburgh School of Art. She specialised in Sculpture and graduated MA (Hons) in 1991.Since then, she has concentrated on Printmaking and she is especially interested in Etching in colour. She used to work mainly in the Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop but she now has her own studio and etching press which gives her more freedom to develop her work. She chooses Still Life and Flower Studies as subjects, bringing a gentle sensitivity to her work. She finds beauty and meaning in familiar things and her etchings are always colourful and lively. Her Still Life prints are etched using three plates, each carrying a primary colour while her Flower Studies are inked up à la poupée, the colours being applied separately to areas of the print on the plate. The different techniques can produce a range of different effects. There are generally 50 prints in each edition; each print in an edition is based on the same plates but there can be variations in the Printmaking process. Ilene also creates monotypes where each print is unique. She exhibits widely and is a professional member of the SAAC (Scottish Artists and Artist Craftsmen).
