back to artists index

FRANK DONNAN was born in Grangemouth, Stirlingshire, and studied at Glasgow School of Art. He became a teacher of art and was principal teacher of art at Wallace High School, Stirling, until his retiral in 1985 when he and his wife moved to Orkney. He  lived and worked there, finding much inspiration for his paintings in the islands, until moving to Aberdeenshire in 2000.

The peace and ever changing light in Orkney appealed to him very much and now his response to the Aberdeenshire landscape can be seen in recent work. His sketchbooks and subsequent paintings reflect a diversity of interest, ranging from the fishing villages of the North East to the grandeur of the Western Highlands, demonstrating the varied topography of the countryside.
