DOUGLAS MATHESON was raised in Musselburgh and began his working life in industry. He later enrolled at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee, where he gained his diploma in Drawing and Painting. After completing his teacher training with distinction, he entered Art and Design education. This led to various principal teacher/head of department posts and secondments to national initiatives. In 1987 he was appointed Adviser in Art and Design for Central Region. Having taken early retirement from this post in 1994, Douglas worked as a National Development officer and consultant until finally retiring in 2001. Throughout his career in education, Douglas continued to draw and paint. Still Life and landscape provided most subject matter, the latter mainly drawn from Scotland and travels in France, Italy and Spain. Whatever the subject matter, composition and arrangement of shapes within a picture space were - and remain - paramount. Colour, texture and tone also play important parts in his work. Douglas continues to experiment with a variety of approaches and styles. He works mostly in acrylic and mixed media, using a variety of techniques whilst also continually refreshing his approach. The style of his work has become looser and less precise as it has developed. Douglas exhibits widely and has had work published in the "Scotland's Artists" series of cards and in their 2006 calendar. Other interest include architecture, design and travel. Douglas lives in Crieff, Perthshire. In these pieces he also focuses on man’s relationship and interaction with his surroundings.
