BIRGITTE HENDIL was born in Copenhagen in 1944. She studied at Edinburgh College of Art, gaining a Diploma and Post Diploma. She used to be known for superbly detailed, beautifully painted studies of birds in their natural habitats but her work took a radical change of direction in the early 1990s. "Unique" is an overused word but it can fairly be used to describe Birgitte Hendil's recent work. She describes her paintings as "pictures of thoughts". They always contain a strong narrative which usually stems from personal experience, often transfigured through myth and legend. She uses paint in an exciting way, using strong colour with great confidence. Trying to make sense of life through painting, her work is always stimulating and full of vitality.
