Sandy McEwan is a distinctive artist who
creates unique collages. Now living in Aberdeenshire, Sandy was
educated in South Africa and England. She studied at Gray’s
School of Art as a mature student, graduating in 2006. While at
art school, she won the RSA Edinburgh Student Show Special Purchase
Prize and the Aberdeen Artists Society GHAT Special Purchase Prize.
Since graduation she has exhibited widely.
She creates evocative 3 dimensional art works,
immaculately crafted from old letters, handwritten bills, maps and other
items. About her work she says "I have always loved making
things, constructing, deconstructing and reconstructing. I am interested
in life’s experiences, both real and imagined, awakening memories and
opening doors to the past to revisit and remember.
I am fascinated by the relationship between the past and present in our
lives especially the way these collide through memories which resurface
unbidden. I like capturing those moments, a glimpse of an object from
childhood, or a remnant of a piece of 1950’s material will be the
starting point in creating a range of evocative designs some recalling
my travels as a child during the 1950’s. Using original 1950’s maps
of countries and places visited, I cut and manipulate the map which then
takes the form and shape of childhood clothes. Each item of clothing has
a powerful connection with the country or place represented by the map.
Each design is made with sincerity and enthusiasm." To see further images, click Search or to check on availability of work click Contact Us.
