PAUL RITCHIE studied at Manchester (BA Fine Art) and Croydon (Advanced Printmaking).  He helped establish the etching department of Peacock Printmakers in Aberdeen and in 1978 he established the highly regarded Manchester Etching Workshop which he ran until moving to Scotland in 2000.  He also ran  a handmade paper mill.

Paul is a distinguished printmaker, acknowledged as a master in the field.  He was elected to the Council of Manchester Academy of Fine Art in 1997.  More recently he has been concentrating on painting and has developed highly distinctive works.  His paintings incorporate engraved wood panels‚ inlaid with paper pulp and pigment‚ to achieve rich textures and tones‚ evoking the atmospheric qualities of the Scottish coast and landscape.

"Paul Ritchie's dark, hugely textured works like "Sutherland Falls" act like cool shadowy retreats.  ...His works have a vigorous surface tension and a sense of place that you can almost smell.  They also possess a grandeur and a gravity that is difficult to balance but Ritchie pulls it off with masterly displays of intense technique."
